How does tooth whitening work?
Special gingival protection is put into place to protect the gums. Then a new gel is applied to the crowns of the teeth. A laser is then aimed at the area. This is repeated one or two times. Then everything is removed and the treated area cleaned. This process results in bright teeth.

How long do the results last?
The results last about 1-1.5 years depending on the patient's habits, whether they smoke heavily or drink coffee, red wine or tea. These might cause discolorization.
Back
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure takes about half an hour to 45 minutes. The gums are protected using a special gingival cover so that they are not harmed during the procedure.
Back
Are there different techniques?
There are methods with certain new gels made expecially for bleaching, which are applied and rinsed off multiple times. They are good for removing the tarnished and stained layers. There are also methods using ultraviolet rays and lasers.
Back
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the various methods?
Disadvantages cannot be determined because of the protection the gel provides the gums and crowns with.

How much brighter will the teeth be?
Teeth can be brightened by 1 to 2 shades.
Back
Is tooth whitening effective on stubborn stains?
The teeth have to be professionally cleaned to remove tartar and plaque before the tooth whitening procedure can be done. Bleach whitening can begin once the plaque has been removed and the spaces between the teeth have been cleaned. The success of the procedure is then visible.
Back
Are the results always even?
The results are not always even. They very from person to person because of the uneven discoloration of the teeth unique to the individual. In all cases however teeth are 1 to 2 shades brighter. That is the success of the procedure.
Back

Back

Back
Is tooth whitening only to be used with healthy teeth?
The treatment can be used with healthy and unhealthy teeth such as teeth with treated roots. The same results cannot be expected for extremely discolored teeth with treated roots and big fillings as for healthy teeth free of fillings.
Back
Can an exposed neck of a tooth be further damaged?
The neck of the tooth is not harmed by the tooth whitening process especially in cases where the gums reach the papilla. The area between the teeth is protected by the gingival protection cover. If there is periodontosis or a lot of bone deterioration, the periodontosis has priority and must be remedied before the whitening process can be done. Tooth whitening can be done later.
Back
Can existing crowns also be whitened?
Crowns do not get as bright and clean as normal teeth. The effect does not last as long for people who smoke or drink coffee and tea. They will have to have the procedure repeated more often.
