What is a breast lift?
A breast lift is a procedure to lift the nipples. This is done through an half-moon shaped incision made from the upper part of the areola to the chest. The nipple is then lifted up, excess skin removed and remaining skin tighted. This lifts the breast.

What happens in an initial consultation?
The entire situation is discussed. The size is examined and the amount of excess skin is determined. Using our medical and aesthetic knowledge we then make a realistic recommendation as to whether surgery is justified. Then the possible results are discussed.

Who is a good candidate for a breast lift?
Women who have slightly saggy breasts because of pregnancy and nursing are ideal. Women whose breasts are larger and more saggy will need more than one lift. A breast reduction is a more suitable solution.

What happens during a breast lift operation?
Doing a breast lift under local anesthesia is tolerable. It can also be done under general anesthesia. It is done under general anesthesia if combined with breast reconstruction.
The skin to be removed is marked before the procedure showing how the breast might look afterwards. An incision is made on the upper edge of the areola and is extended excising the entire area of skin to be removed. The remaining skin is pulled together and stitches made as unconspicuously as possible. The operation is then complete.

How safe is a breast lift?
The operation itself is safe. Its safety depends on the woman and whether the operation is appropriate for her.

How long does the operation take?
The operation takes from 20-30 minutes per side.

How bad is the pain during and after the operation?
No pain during an operation made under general anesthesia has been reported. Pain in the wounds can result after the operation. There is special pain medication available so that the entire operation is without discomfort and complication.

Is a breast lift always possible?
A breast lift is not always possible. It depends on the patient.

Does an inpatient stay have to be scheduled?
An inpatient stay is not necessary for this procedure. The patient can go home after the procedure but must wear a special corsage and special surgical bra to support the weight of the breasts.

How long do results last?
The results last as long as the patient wears a bra.

When will I be fit and ready to get back to daily life again?
Stitches are removed after 8-10 days. The patient can return to normal life after the surgery but the breasts must always be supported by the special surgical bra.

What precautions should be taken after the operation?
After the stitches have been removed the patient must be sure to apply scar ointment. The support bra must be worn as long as possible.

Will there be any visible scarring?
Visible scarring is possible. A small scar correction surgery is possible after 1-1.5 years. This is however unusual.

Are there any risks or side effects?
There is a risk of wide scars and inflammation in the operated area. This is however rare. As long as the work is done in a sterile environment this does not happen.

What type of anesthesia are used and will I have to stay overnight?
This is usually done under local anesthesia. It can be done under general anesthesia if combined with another operation or if the patient so desires.
